Book of Mormon breaks box office record for single day of sales

According to a press statement from the show’s producers, “Between 10:00 AM and midnight on Friday, March 22, the day after
opening, £2,107,972 ($3,210,019) was taken in ticket sales.”

As previously reported, 150,000
additional tickets have been made available and the show is now booking
until January 11, 2014.

Producer Sonia Friedman, who brought the Tony-winning show from Broadway to the West End, said: “On behalf of everyone involved in The Book of Mormon, we are bowled over to be setting this quite
extraordinary record.”

Cameron Mackintosh, owner of the Prince
of Wales Theatre where the show is running, added: “After a phenomenal opening night I am delighted
to see a phenomenal record-breaking post opening box office of over
£2million. The Mormons have truly delivered a Heavenly hit!”

On Broadway, where The Book of Mormon has been running since 2011, the show has broken the Eugene O’Neill Theatre’s
house record 44 times.

The Book of Mormon comes from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez. The show, which won nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, follows a pair of Mormon boys sent on a mission to a place that’s a long way from Salt Lake City.

Directed by Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker, the West End run stars Gavin Creel and Jared Gertner (pictured above) as Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, alongside Alexia Khadime, Giles Terera, Chris Jarman and Stephen Ashfield.

Mark Rubinstein, president of the Society of London Theatre said: “Congratulations to The Book of Mormon for their amazing record-breaking
sales today. It is fantastic to have such a brilliant show reaching
out to new audiences for the West End and ensuring that they have a
great night of musical entertainment.”
