Dexter, Masson & Protheroe travel to Narnia with Goold
Casting has been announced for Rupert Goold‘s Kensington Gardens production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe with Sally Dexter, Forbes Masson and Brian Protheroe taking on the roles of the White Witch, Mr Tumnus and the Professor respectively.
Goold, who will also adapt CS Lewis’ Narnia tale for the stage, is joined in the directing team by Michael Fentiman. The production is designed by Tom Scutt.
Lewis’ much-loved book centres on four siblings, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, who discover the magical world of Narnia when they pass through a mysterious wardrobe door. Ruled by the White Witch who has cast a spell making it forever winter, the children together with new found friends battle to bring happiness to the land in a classic tale of good versus evil.
Sally Dexter’s was recently seen at the Young Vic playing Gertrude opposite Michael Sheen‘s Hamlet. Her other stage credits include Tis Pity She’s a Whore (West Yorkshire Playhouse), The Recruiting Officer, Closer, The Theatre of Blood, The Winter’s Tale (National Theatre), King Lear, Troilus and Cressida and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (RSC).
In the West End she has starred in shows including Billy Elliott and Sister Act, receiving an Olivier Award nomination for her performances as Nancy in Sam Mendes‘ production of Oliver!
Her many television credits include A touch of Frost, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Dalziel and Pascoe and Night and Day. She also co-wrote the three part BBC comedy drama series Sugartown.
Forbes Masson is best known for his comedy partnership with Alan Cumming, together they wrote and starred in the BBC’s comedy The High Life.
His other television appearances include Red Dwarf, EastEnders, Is it Bill Bailey? and A Young Person’s Guide to Becoming a Rock Star. Amongst his multiple RSC credits are recent appearances in As you Like It, Romeo and Juliet, Morte d’Arthur and The Grain Store.
His other recent theatre credits include King Lear (Liverpool Playhouse/Young Vic) and the new musical comedy Crackers (Belgrade Theatre, Coventry). Mason has also written and composed a series of musicals; Stiff (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh), Mince and Pants (Dundee Rep Theatre).
Amongst myriad credits, Brian Protheroe has recent been seen in the West End in Broken Glass which transferred to the Vaudeville Theatre following a run at Kilburn’s Tricycle Theatre. He also played the role of Saruman in the West End musical The Lord of The Rings.
His other recent theatre credits include Moonlight and Magnolias (Watermill Theatre), Noises Off (Birmingham Rep), Pericles, The Tempest and The Winter’s Tale (RSC).
On television Protheroe has appeared in My Family, Spooks, Love Soup, North and South and 55 Degrees North. Also a successful singer/songwriter, Protheroe released his first three albums Pinball, Pick up and I/You in the 1970’s followed by Citysong in 2005.
Following its 16-week run in Kensington Gardens in the summer of 2009, threesixty’s production of Peter Pan transferred to the O2 and on to an American tour, which is currently in Boston. It has, according to publicity material, acquired many “celebrity fans” along the way, including Russell Crowe, Tim Burton, Barbara Windsor, Tamsin Greig and Ben Elton.
