LaBute, Fox and Williams Go Dark & Deep in Q&A

A Neil LaBute world premiere starring Olivia Williams and Matthew Fox couldn’t fail to draw a range of theatregoers to the Vaudeville Theatre last night and as all 250 of us found our seats there was a real sense of anticipation in the auditorium.

LaBute is well-known for his dark comedies and admitted last night at the post-show Q&A, when asked why he didn’t write a sunny comedy, that his interest is in the implosion of relationships and happy couples simply don’t make as good drama (and who can argue with that!). In a Forst Dark and Deep is certainly a example of this as sibling rivalries come to a head in a forest cabin one dark and stormy night. Matthew Fox and Olivia Williams as brother and sister take us on a journey of pain and discovery and Fox certainly chose a difficult character for his West End Debut, really earning his stripes! Williams, no stranger to the stage, presented a complicated character with ease managing to hold the audience throughout.

Following the performance we were joined not only by Fox and Williams but also LaBute himself – writer and director of the piece. LaBute was able to tell us more about his work in general, this piece in particular and his love of the West End. Fox and Williams fielded questions about working with La Bute, how they chose what to work on and how they prepared for these difficult roles.
