1st Night Photos: Liza Minnelli Shares Umbrellas

Kneehigh Theatre Company’s adaptation of Michel Legrand‘s 1964 French film musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg opened at the West End’s Gielgud Theatre last night (22 March, previews from 5 March), where an eclectic range of guests included the composer himself and Liza Minnelli, who once recorded a version of the Oscar-winning song “I Will Wait for You”.

Adapted and directed by Emma Rice with a translation by Sheldon Harnick the story is described in marketing material as “a French romance that just happens to be sung”. The production, which features a cast including two-time Olivier Award winner Joanna Riding and cabaret star Meow Meow, played Leicester’s Curve Theatre prior to its West End transfer.
