Sheffield Crucible’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Lindsay Posner and starring Henry Goodman as Tevye – the role made famous by Topol – is tipped to be opening at the Savoy Theatre this summer. Rumours have abounded since the show’s four and five star rave reviews when it opened in Sheffield back in December 2006 that it would transfer to the West End (See News, 17 May 2006), and now we hear the Savoy is the chosen venue. If the musical does open at the Savoy in the next few months, it will mean the closure of Trevor Nunn’s musical adaptation of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which is currently booking to 27 October 2007. Nunn’s production, for which he recently won the Award for Best Director (as well as for his work on Tom Stoppard’s Rock 'n' Roll, see Photos, 2 Mar 2007), is tipped to transfer to Broadway this autumn (See The Goss, 20 Dec 2006).
