Although South African song and dance show Umoja has lost its bid to reopen at the Shaftesbury Theatre, following last month's action by Camden Council to close it down after noise complaints (see News, 1 Mar 2002), there's a chance that the popular show may yet return to the West End this year. The show's producers are apparently in negotiations to bring Umoja into the Queen's Theatre, further down on Shaftesbury Avenue, where another South African song and dance show, The Mysteries, has just opened to enthusiastic reviews. The latter, based on the York Mystery Plays, is booking for a limited 12-week season up to 6 April 2002, ahead of a world tour. It's rumoured that Umoja could then move into the theatre in May. The Strand Theatre - where Peter Gill's play, The York Realist, opens this week for a limited run to 20 April - has also been mentioned as a possibility for Umoja.
