Whatsonstage.com Award winner Minchin plans new musical?

Tim Minchin has revealed he is working on a new musical following his work on the RSC’s multi award-winning adaptation of Matilda.

Speaking at last night’s Whatsonstage.com Awards Concert, Minchin revealed he is working on another adaptation but remained coy on further details.

“I’m currently trying to write some songs for a new stage musical,” he revealed, “hopefully in the next month or two I’ll be able to talk about what that is.”

But he added he was unsure whether the project was suitable for musical theatre. “There’s a certain distance you have to go before you know whether it’s a musical and I think sometimes people forget to give themselves the option to say ‘no, it’s not there.’”

If the project is confirmed it seems certain that producers will be clambering to stage the new show. Matilda, which Minchin wrote with playwright Dennis Kelly, continues its sell out run at the Cambridge Theatre and opens on Broadway next month.

At last night’s Concert Minchin collected Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his role as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, performing “Heaven on Their Minds” (pictured) alongside co-star and fellow award-winner Melanie C.
