Podcast: #WOSOuting to Great Expectations

Last night (21 February 2013) we took theatregoers to see Great Expectations at the Vaudeville Theatre, followed by an exclusive post-show Q&A on our latest Outing.

Great Expectations has been adapted for the stage by Scottish playwright Jo Clifford, and is directed by Graham McLaren. Cast includes Jack Ellis as Jaggers, Chris Ellison as Magwitch, Paul Nivison as Adult Pip and Paula Wilcox as Miss Havisham.

Following the show, we were joined for a Q&A by cast members Paul Nivison, Grace Rowe, Jack Ellis, Taylor Jay-Davies and Paula Wilcox. They talked about the design of the show, with the production played out in Miss Havisham’s room, and the ways in which the story has been adapted from the novel.

They also discussed their ‘cartoonish’ characterisations, and how they try to capture the passion and emotion of the characters, trying to embrace the way Dickens would have wanted the characters to have been played. Rowe talked about the nice thing about being able to refer back to the novel if needed, and her struggles to empathise with her “heartless” character.

They talked about the live streaming of the show that they had recently done, and the nice thing about having school groups in the audience. Finally, the cast all revealed what Dickens means to each of them, and the relationship they had with his novels before and after the experience of the show.
