Caryl Churchill’s Hospital premieres in new Finborough season

London’s Finborough Theatre has announced its new season, which features the world premiere of Caryl Churchill‘s 1972 one act play The Hospital At The Time Of The Revolution.

There will also be new plays from Bekah Brunstetter and David Hutchison, as well as the English premiere of Stewart Conn’s I Didn’t
Always Live Here, a rare revival of “groundbreaking Ulster classic” Over The Bridge and the European premiere of Off-Broadway musical Rooms – A Rock Romance.

The season opens with I Didn’t
Always Live Here (26 March-20 April), Stewart Conn’s play centring on elderly neighbours in a Glasgow tenement. Billed as “a compassionate and heart rending journey into the forgotten lives of the dispossessed and elderly”, it was first seen at the Glasgow Citz in 1967 and was last revived at Dundee Rep in 1973.

The Time Of The Revolution, which plays on Sundays,
Mondays and Tuesdays from 31 March to 16 April.

Caryl Churchill‘s 1972 play, which her agent confirmed has never been staged before, is inspired by the life and work of psychiatrist and philosopher Frantz Fanon and is set in his clinic in 1956 Algeria. According to press material the play, which is directed by James Russell, is “a forensic insight into the adjustment of morality for the sake of conscience.”

May sees the European premiere of a new musical, Rooms – A Rock Romance by Scottish composer/lyricist Paul
Scott Goodman. Playing
23 April to 18 May 2013 and directed by Andrew Keates, the 1970s-set show charts the professional and personal journey of two rockers who travel from Glasgow to the dizzy heights of New York.

It’s accompanied on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays (28 April-14 May) by a revival of Sam Thompson’s 1960 Ulster sectarian drama Over The Bridge, directed by Emma Faulkner.

Rounding off the season is the professional premiere of Finborough playwright-in-residence Bekah Brunstetter‘s Nothing Is The End Of The World (Except For The End Of The World), running from 21 May to 8 June 2013. It’s accompanied by the premiere of The Blood Is Strong by David Hutchison, a new writer in his 60s, which plays on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays from 26 May to 4 June.
