Haymarket Shows Charity After Godot???

Rumours have been swirling for weeks regarding a venue for the speculated West End transfer of the Menier Chocolate Factory’s acclaimed revival of Sweet Charity, starring Tamzin Outhwaite in the title role (See The Goss, 19 Jan 2010).

Previous rumours that it would be heading to Wyndham’s Theatre were scotched by the news that Avenue Q is moving there after its current run finishes at the Gielgud (See News, 26 Jan 2010).

But now we hear the venue of choice is Theatre Royal Haymarket, where Waiting for Godot finishes on 3 April. If true, it would mean that Lindsay Posner‘s rumoured revival of Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance (See The Goss, 10 Dec 2009) has been put back.

Sweet Charity, which has music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and a book by Neil Simon, takes a look at the seedy underbelly of 1960s New York. The gullible, enchanting heroine Charity Hope Valentine dances, laughs and cries her way through a series of whirlwind romances to show-stopping numbers including “Rhythm of Life”, “If My Friends Could See Me Now” and “Hey Big Spender”.

The Chocolate Factory revival, which opened to rave reviews in December (See Review Round-up, 8 Dec 2009), is directed by Matthew White and choreographed by Stephen Mears.
