Jailhouse Rock’s planned inter-West End move has encountered an obstacle. The stage musical adaptation of Elvis Presley’s seminal 1957 film must vacate the Piccadilly Theatre on 2 April in order to make way for Michael Grandage’s revival of Guys and Dolls, starring Ewan McGregor (See News, 14 Dec 2004). The plan was then to transfer Jailhouse Rock to the Albery in May. However, show producers say they were offered the Albery for an open-ended run, which owners at the Ambassador Theatre Group are no longer able to promise since, on 28 September 2005, the leases for both the Albery and the backing Wyndham’s Theatre revert back to Mackintosh, who plans to give them a £2 million makeover (See Features, 30 Jun 2003). A show spokesperson says the transfer is not commercially worthwhile for such a short period. They’re now considering options, including a move to another possible venue.
