The public members on this year’s Laurence Olivier Awards judging panel have been doing more than whistle-blowing about voting procedures (See News, 17 Feb 2004). At least two of them anyway, who’ve been rather more pre-occupied with romance. At Sunday’s awards ceremony (See News, 22 Feb 2004), met the happy couple from the Plays panel whose love of theatre has blossomed into love in general. They said, although they’d only backed one of the night’s winners (The Pillowman for Best New Play), they couldn’t be happier. Apparently, their fellow panellists are already planning hat purchases for the big day – not that we want to jinx anything. On the subject of winners and losers, Joan Plowright, aka Lady Olivier, imparted some of her late husband’s advice to the evening’s disappointed nominees. “Larry used to say he didn’t believe in prizes for acting … unless he was getting one.”
