It’s a case of life imitating art, or is it art imitating life? Either way, there’s no shortage of irony in last Thursday’s incident at Soho Theatre. At one of the final performances of Hurricane last week, Richard Dormer, who plays alcoholic snooker player Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins, was forced to stop the performance and eject a disruptive drunkard from the audience. Dormer’s one-man show and The Riot Group’s Pugilist Specialist, with which it’s been running concurrently, have proved massive hits for Soho Theatre, where they finished their limited seasons this past Saturday. Both of the Edinburgh Fringe award winners were offered immediate transfers to the West End, but extensive touring schedules meant that wasn’t possible. That said, Pugilist Specialist will return to London for a further three weeks at Riverside Studios in April (See News, 26 Jan 2004).
