Theatregoers who attended last night's performance of South Pacific at the National Theatre are reporting that Philip Quast was awarded this year's Best Actor in a Musical Olivier in a special presentation by actress Maria Friedman, who surprised Quast on the stage at the curtain call for the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. The moment was filmed to be used as part of tomorrow's lunchtime Oliviers ceremony at the Victoria Palace Theatre as well as for the BBC TV broadcast on Saturday. Quast was nominated for South Pacific and was up against Jonathan Pryce (My Fair Lady), Paul Keating (Closer to Heaven) and Brent Barrett (Kiss Me Kate. Quast has won the Best Actor in a Musical Oliver twice before - for Sunday in the Park with George (another NT production) and for The Fix (Donmar Warehouse). A full list of winners for the 2002 Oliviers will be posted on as soon as they are announced tomorrow.
