Sonia Friedman, who recently set up her own West End production company with ATG backing, is apparently planning a new stage version of Martin Scorsese's blackly humorous The King of Comedy. In the 1983 film, Robert DeNiro played Rupert Pupkin, a loner obsessed with becoming a successful comedian like his idol, talk show host Jerry Langford, played by Jerry Lewis. Pupkin stalks and eventually kidnaps Langford in order to perform his stand-up routine. The stage play is expected to premiere in late 2002 or early 2003.
