Mackintosh plans ‘Lazarus’ treatment for Moby & Martin?

Riding high on the global success of the big screen adaptation of Les Miserables, Cameron Mackintosh has turned his attention to revivals of some of his not so prominent musicals.

When Moby Dick originally opened in 1992 it beached after just four months, with the Telegraph naming it one of the ten worst musicals of all time.

But speaking to the Evening Standard recently, Mackintosh said that a new production of the short-lived show will soon be seen “in London in a pub theatre” and that “there’s one being eyed up for Broadway in the next two years”.

The most obvious candidates for the London production would be the Union, Landor or recently relocated Southwark Playhouse, though according to the Guardian recently, Landor producers Thomas Hopkins and Danielle Tarento have ruled themselves out after a planned 2011 revival fell through.

Mackintosh’s second “Lazarus” revival is supposedly Boublil and Schonberg’s Martin Guerre. He told the Standard: “Believe me, once we get it all right, Martin Guerre will rise again.”

Whether he can tempt former cast member James Corden, who cut his acting teeth in the Martin Guerre ensemble, back to the fold remains to be seen…
