Ken Alexander becomes Royal Court Liverpool’s first artistic director

The Royal Court Theatre has announced that Ken Alexander will be the venue’s first artistic director.

Chief executive Kevin Fearon told the Liverpool Echo: “Ken’s appointment will broaden the type of work we do here at the Royal Court and also link us more strongly to the excellent work that the Royal Court Liverpool Trust does in education and community access.”

Alexander’s previous credits include directing Dirty Dancing and Lucky Numbers for the Royal Court, as well as a stint as executive director at Byre Theatre in Scotland. He is currently serving as director of A Nightmare on Lime Street.

He told the Echo that his goal for the theatre is to “create a structured seasonal programme at the Liverpool theatre, support new talent, and encourage productions to return to what was once ‘a premiere drama house’.”

The Royal Court Theatre has been in operation in Liverpool since 1881 and was the most popular theatre touring site in Liverpool until the 1970’s (read Royal Court Theatre’s history here).

Alexander added: “I’m really looking forward to building on the amazing achievements the Royal Court has seen since it started creating theatre productions in Liverpool, nurturing and developing the wealth of talent that exists here.”
