John Barrowman taken to hospital after panto injury

West End and Torchwood star John Barrowman has been taken to hospital following an injury sustained while performing in pantomime in Glasgow.

Barrowman is reported to have fallen off a horse during today’s matinee performance of Jack and the Beanstalk at the SECC Clyde Auditorium. He is not believed to be seriously injured.

An spokeswoman for the venue said: “During today’s matinee performance of Jack and the Beanstalk, John Barrowman suffered an injury on stage and has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

“His understudy, Greg Barrowman (John’s cousin), has already stepped in to finish the rest of the show.”

Barrowman, whose stage credits include La Cage Aux Folles and Anything Goes, is starring in the panto alongside The Krankies.

The show,which runs until 6 January, promises “spectacular surprises including a fantastic 3D Giant and an amazing journey through the giant’s castle.”

Jack and the Beanstalk is Barrowman’s third pantomime with The Krankies in his home city of Glasgow. It hasn’t been confirmed whether he’ll return before the end of Jack and the Beanstalk.

In 2004 Janette Tough – aka Wee Jimmy Krankie – fell 20 feet from a mechanical beanstalk at the Glasgow Pavilion Theatre, fracturing her skull and breaking her collarbone and two ribs.
