Made in Dagenham Graces Musical Stage in 2013???
The 2010 film Made in Dagenham, which told the story of the 1968 Ford sewing machinists strike where women walked out of the East London car plant in protest against sexual discrimination, could be adapted for the musical stage with a book by One Man, Two Guvnors‘ Richard Bean.
Depending on theatre availability the screen-to-stage production could be seen in the West End as early as 2013.
The Mail‘s Baz Bamigboye quotes the managing director of Stage Entertainment Rebecca Quigley who will co-produce the show with Number 9 Film’s Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen. According to Quigley the show will be “a purely original British musical,” following in the footsteps of Billy Elliot.
A reading of the book and the “handful of numbers” completed reportedly took place before Christmas, with a workshop of the show’s first act anticipated for next month.
William Ivory’s 2010 film, which was directed by Nigel Cole, starred Sally Hawkins as the unlikely workers’ heroine as well as Andrea Riseborough, Geraldine James, Miranda Richardson, Rosamund Pike and Jaime Winstone, as well as Bob Hoskins and Daniel Mays. Casting for the stage production has still to be announced.
