Wicked, the “untold story of the witches of Oz”, has broken the all-time record for a single week’s gross, as theatregoers flocked to see the show at the West End’s Apollo Victoria over the Christmas holiday. The musical - which now stars Kerry Ellis in the role of green witch Elphaba (See News, 13 Dec 2006) - grossed £873,020 between 26 and 30 December 2006, during Whatsonstage.com Award nominee Idina Menzel’s final week in the production (click here to vote now!). Performers squeezed nine shows into the week to meet demand for tickets. Wicked previously staked its claim as “London’s top grossing musical”, with the highest weekly gross in West End history when, during the week ending 28 October 2006, more than three-quarters of a million pounds (£761,125) was taken at box office - a figure higher than any other West End show running at the time and the highest weekly eight-show gross in the West End ever. Since its first public performance on 7 September 2006, Wicked has been seen by more than 250,000.
