Politics may be taking centre stage in the West End this coming April. According to media reports today, Blunkett - The Musical is in the pipeline. The musical is to be based on the life of former Home Secretary David Blunkett, who stepped down at the end of last year following a tabloid frenzy over his affair with Kimberly Quinn and allegations regarding his alleged misuse of ministerial privileges. Blunkett - The Musical is being written by journalist Ginny Dougray, who has interviewed all the key players. This wouldn’t be the first time theatre and politics have collided – witness the critically panned courtroom drama, The Accused, by disgraced Tory party chairman and millionaire author Jeffrey Archer in 2001. Archer starred in the play in the run-up to his real-life Old Bailey trial. That production closed in the West End after just six weeks and some of the worst reviews in recent history. Let’s hope Blunkett fares better.
