WOS TV: Les Miserables Marks Epic 25th BirthdayDate: 4 October 2010 Tube strike and travel disruptions notwithstanding, impresario Cameron Mackintosh succeeded yesterday (3 October 2010) in putting on a spectacular finale to the 25th anniversary celebrations of Les Miserables: an epic birthday concert performed by a 500-strong company and watched by a 20,000-strong capacity audience at The O2 – and watched my many thousands more at cinema screens across the country (and, from today, around the world). And our video partners at Reelkandi were there to capture all the glory and talk to the key players behind this momentous occasion.... The cast of The O2 company was led by Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean, Nick Jonas as Marius, Norm Lewis as Javert, Matt Lucas as Thenardier, Lea Salonga as Fantine, Jenny Galloway as Madame Thenardier, Katie Hall as Cosette, Ramin Karimloo as Enjolras and Samantha Barks as Eponine, joined by the casts of the West End production, the 25th anniversary production (which finished its homecoming season at the Barbican on Saturday) and members of the original 1985 London company. | Comment | Date | | I didn't go to the 02 or the cinema to see this but after seeing Gareth more than once in the touring show, I fail to see why he was not picked for the part of Marius as in my opinion you would struggle to find anyone who could do a better job. - Paulette | 06 Oct 10 |
| | I saw the show at Cineworld in Llandudno. As mentioned elsewhere the entire show was out of sync. The sound was just slightly behind the picture. I complained to the manager during the interval (had to queue up to do this, as many were complaining) and he said there was nothing they could do, and that it was the same in several other cinemas he had contacted. The odd thing was that when the cameras gave us a wide shot of the arena it emerged that the sound was perfectly in sync with the huge screens behind the performers. This led me to think that the audience in the O2, especially those at the back of the arena relying on the big screens, must have experienced the reverse out of sync experience, with the picture slightly behind the sound. Can anybody who was there confirm this? Anyway, this technical glitch is quite unacceptable nowadays. If Sky had been broadcasting it live I'm sure they would have managed to keep sound in sync with vision. - Stewart | 06 Oct 10 |

Show stunning, with the exception of a very weak Nick Jonas - whose idea was it to have him in such an important milestone. Having seen Gareth Gates do a magnificent job in Edinburgh and the Barbican, he should have been the obvious choice. - David | 05 Oct 10 |
| | Had no idea who Nick Jonas was before watching. I just thought the Marius bad! Wish they had cast someone else rather than him - overall was great though but on DVD will play Michael Ball over him! - Sue | 05 Oct 10 |
| | Jocelyn - I went in not knowing about Jonas's casting. I sat there in the first half disappointed as hell in Marius and struck by his naff boy-band thin voice. It was only in the interval that I found out who he was.
Face it: he may be able to sing in tune and pleasantly enough, but he's no Marius and certainly not capable of mixing it in big bombastic numbers like Red and Black. His Empty Chairs wasn't actually that bad, but overall he was simply disappointing and lacking in charisma and power.
The rest of the cast were almost uniformly great, though, and it was a superb evening overall. - Matt | 05 Oct 10 |
| | Les Miserables was breathtaking. I thought they did a great job blending the new talent with the old. I think those disappointed in Jonas only came with a pre-conceived notion. His performance of "Empty Chairs" was moving and his voice was beautiful. - Jocelyn | 04 Oct 10 |
| | I thought the entire cast was splendid. And I was most impressed with Nick Jonas. For only 18, he graced the stage with the talent of a veteran. Well done! - Julie | 04 Oct 10 |
| | Shame about Nick Jonas - not up to the part. The others were excellent. - Kate | 04 Oct 10 |
| | This evening was amazing, no tickets available for the 02 so went to a "Live Screening" at Cineworld Hull. Only 2 problems, entire show was out of sync and young Mr Jonas was a weak Marius. - Tony Cooper | 04 Oct 10 |
| | This was a great show. Alfie Boe was astounding and Matt Lucas and most of the other players were fine.Second act spoilt by the weak Nick Jonas. Having seen Gareth Gates do a fantastic job in the the Barbican Les Mis last week I have to ask where was he? - Chris Sweeney | 04 Oct 10 |
