It's a Chinese proverb that maintains "life is a tragedy for those who feel; and a comedy for those who think". Michael Moore is definitely a thinker, but it'd be wrong to label him a comedian or dismiss his one-man show as extended stand-up. He feels, he thinks and then he gets angry.
Given the American's notoriety in his own country, it's interesting - but no accident - that he's chosen to make his stage debut on foreign soil. Moore has built a career criticising his compatriots, which hasn't always made him popular. Certainly not so with former General Motors' chief Roger Smith (the relentlessly pursued subject of Moore's first documentary Roger and Me), NRA frontman Charlton Heston (under fire in his latest gun-control film Bowling for Columbine) or President George Bush who Moore dubs the "thief-in-chief" in his new book Stupid White Men.
The publication of Stupid White Men in the States - where the first 50,000 copies rolled off the press...

At it's best, this is great thought-provoking stuff - but he too often becomes preachy, losing much in the process (possibly more so to a more cynical British audience ?). His research is very impressive, though - he can always back up his arguments with apparantly sound information. On Sunday 1st December, he appeared to divert from the 'plan' to hector the audience for not clapping 'we must never let the holocaust happen again' as much as it cheered in defence of the Palestinian cause. You certainly knew you were at a live event as this completely changed the atmosphere. Despite his apparent regret, I have to say I found it refreshing to be at an event which is truely LIVE, reponding to what happens live. I would like to know a bit more about the economics of the show (and the book and the film!). There was a sense of 'rock-show rip off' - a one man show @ £30 (plus the £2.50 booking fee, of course) expensive programmes, and expensive drinks......I was surprised there were no Michael Moore mugs and t.shirts ! ...
