To fill a two hour concert-style production with great music from start to finish is often a somewhat daunting prospect, unless you happen to be using the back catalogue of hits by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. With so many million sellers to sing, and four tremendous vocalists to deliver them, what you get with New Jersey Nights is a fantastic feel-good show that has everyone on their feet and shouting for more. Far removed from the documentary style of a similar show residing in the West End, this is a show that is touring the world celebrating the musical genius and the very individual and iconic sound that, for those of us old enough to remember, was a musical highlight of the 1960s and 70s. From the moment that the six dancers take to the stage and the live band strike up the familiar sound of “Oh What a Night”, the near capacity audience start dancing in their seats and clapping along, only to be whisked to even higher excitement when they hear just how good the vocalists are at re-creating the Four Seasons sound. There is no “Frankie” in this show, the lead vocals are shared between Jon Hawkins, Ricky Rojas, Duncan Heather and Damion Scarcella with each taking a turn in the limelight before returning the background to supply the superb close harmony backing for the next lead vocalist. The scenes show how the group graduated from performing in bars, through to their first recording days and then, in the second half, onto the concert stage but they are quite subtle and that subtlety only helps to emphasise the brilliance of the music and dancing which, despite having quite a small company, is totally non- stop. Special mention goes to a couple of the dancers who seemed to stand out above the rest. Charlie England shows off his smooth side with some nifty moves and Samantha Heather looks every inch as good as Olivia Newton-John when she dons the tight t-shirt and leggings in “Grease”, a Frankie Valli solo hit. A couple of highlights in the production, for me, are the wonderful first act finale which contains “Sherry”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and“Walk Like a Man” and gives Damion Scarcella the opportunity to show off that distinctive falsetto sound. The second highlight is much more poignant as Duncan Heather tells the audience of the tragic early deaths of Frankie Valli’s daughters and then, as the audience fall totally silent, he goes on the sing Fallen Angel – with just a guitar accompaniment - a moment of pure theatrical magic. Together with an amazing a-cappella version of “Silence is Golden”, a little bit of comedy and an awful lot of singing, clapping and dancing from the, very appreciative audience, this is a show that can’t help but make you feel good and the huge standing ovation for this incredibly talented cast, who obviously love every second of the show, was very well deserved....
