Synopsis
Following on from the Menier Chocolate Factory's acclaimed productions of Sunday in the Park with George and A Little Night Music, Stephen Sondheim's latest musical, Road Show premieres at the Chocolate Factory from 24th June. This production is directed and designed by the Tony Award Winning John Doyle and features David Bedella, Michael Jibson, Jon Robyns and Gillian Bevan.
Set in the early part of the twentieth-century, Road Show tells the true boom-and-bust story of Addison Mizner and his fast-talking brother Wilson, two of the most colourful and outrageous fortune seekers in American history.
From panning for gold in Alaska to building the city of Boca Raton in Florida, both were driven by the need to succeed - at whatever cost...
Road Show originally premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop from October through November 1999 under the title Wise Guys. It was directed by Sam Mendes and starred Nathan Lane and Victor Garber.
Rewritten and retitled Bounce, the show opened in June 2003 at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. The production was directed by Harold Prince and starred Richard Kind and Howard McGillin.
A new production of the musical, now with the title Road Show, opened Off-Broadway at The Public Theatre's Newman Theater in November 2008 directed by John Doyle with Michael Cerveris and Alexander Gemignani, winning the 2009 Obie and Drama Desk Awards.

Michael Coveney - 7 July 2011
It’s been a long road for Road Show, Stephen Sondheim’s historical parable of capitalism and self-advancement (with a book by JohnWeidman). So long, in fact, it bears no relation at all to his original idea, which was for a sort of “Road” movie of the Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour variety.
John Doyle’s busy but curiously soulless production – performed in a traverse arrangement over 100 undivided minutes – recounts the rise and fall story of an artistic architect and his gung-ho, gambling brother as a sort of jaundiced vaudeville of the American dream.
Even though, for all the musical invention and spirited performance, it still fails to hang together in any sort of dramatic fashion, as a piece of musical theatre machinery it’s just fine and dandy: a streamlined hybrid of the original Wise Guys, workshopped by Sam Mendes in 1999, the Hal Prince production of Bounce that be...

I booked the Road Show, at the Chocolate Factory knowing nothing about the show but as I am a fan of Sondheim thought go on give it a go. I was not let down. The show travels along the Road so to speak at breakneck pace. Brilliant idea of no interval leaves you feeling that you have travelled the journey with the two brothers, played faultlessly by David Bedella and Michael Gibson, and the stand out performance for me was the mother played by the perfect Gillian Bevan. The emotional aspect brought in by Jon Robbins playing Hollis was timed to perfection. My only criticism was that I wanted more. This Road Show I could have watched for double the time, as the characters progression was rather sporadic. Certainly not a Yellow Bricked Road with a happy ending by no means, but a wizard of a production. Fantastic....
