Laura Norman - 18 April 2011
Cult-classic Little Shop of Horrors, is based on a 1960s film of the same name, with music by Alan Menken and words by Howard Ashman. It’s a delightful spoof of sci-fi horror and tells a rather silly tale of a timid florist shop boy Seymour, who wins fame but more importantly the girl (co-worker Audrey) when he discovers a new species of plant, Audrey II. His plant unfortunately has rather specific tastes and Seymour must make some difficult decisions in order to ensure that Audrey II stays fed and happy!
In this production director Paul Taylor-Mills has not only done away with the traditional Audrey II puppets, replacing them with the three actors (who also play the Ronettes), but also swaps nightly those actors - one night boys and one night girls. In this performance the ladies (Laura Mansell, Olga Marie-Pratt and Chloe Akam) own the stage and are an extremely sensuous and delightfully vicious Audrey II, a bizarre mix akin to Disney...

I attended Little Shop of Horrors at The White Bear on Monday the 11th April. "Gender Bending" is the bait for this production. 3 Male Actors portraying the Ronettes and Audrey II. From the offset one is transported to a crime scene at Mushnik's Florist Shop, Downtown, New York as an inebriated "wino" Huw Evans stumbles over to the Ivories and my goodness can this Musical Director play. Single handedly flitting between two keyboards. A four strong ensemble fill the stage, unconventionally singing the prologue in three part harmony. I know I'm in for a good night, the sound is epic. From start to finish the ensemble deliver, bouncing around the intimate playing space with gusto & commitment, particularly Victoria Butler. Eliza Anderson gives a sincere performance as the tragic Audrey, giving the usually "ditzy" role depth and actuality. Constantine Andronikou gives an energetic portrayal as Mushnik, making an otherwise bland character very likeable. The man eating plant Audrey II and the gender bent Ronettes are played by Martin Milnes, Mikey Shearer & James Armstrong. Ultimately this idea works, with a particularly intricate performance from Shearer as Audrey II. But, one can't help feeling that this concept would be more suited to a larger space. James Benn's Seymour is wonderfully detailed and he and Anderson have a great chemistry. All in all this charming revival has bite and is well worth a watch. ...
