Synopsis

Is it Jane and Michael Banks who need a nanny? Or is it their parents, George (the stuffy bank worker) and Winifred who actually need more looking after? Only one thing is certain. When Mary Poppins arrives, with her no-nonsense approach to making the right choices in life, nothing will ever be the same again.

Scarlett Strallen as the new Mary Poppins in the Disney and Cameron Mackintosh production is certainly flying high. She - along with the other major additions to the cast in the form of Aden Gillett and Eliza Lumley as Mr and Mrs Banks - gives the show a boost as the nanny who comes to sort out a frankly dysfunctional family.

As a huge fan of the movie, for me it would be almost impossible to surpass the iconic performance of Julie Andrews, and few actresses could come close without merely copying, which Strallen wisely doesn’t do. However, she does take more of the sweet and mischievous qualities familiar to those who fondly remember the film - and that's the majority of the audience judging by the reactions to some of the openings of the much-loved Sherman brothers’ classics, never mind the applause which follows afterwards - than her predecessor (Olivier Award winner Laura Michelle Kelly), but keeps a fine balance between the genial manner of the...

I went to see Mary Poppins for my tenth birthday and it was the best present I could have possibly asked for. Seeing a west end production is a real treat for me, but it is the thing I enjoy most in the whole world, so I had very high expectations when I walked into the Prince Edward Theatre and when I walked out I was definitely not disappointed; I was gobsmacked. :) ...
