Synopsis
The Last Five Years is a show about a marriage. It is told from two angles: from the man's point of view it starts at their first meeting and ends in the present, when the marriage breaks up. From the woman s point of view, it starts in the present and works back in time to the first meeting. Only at the wedding, in the centre of the piece, do the stories intersect. The relationship is between a 'nice Jewish boy' and an Christian girl in New York City. During a five year period, they fall in love, marry and their relationship gradually sours and they finally divorce.

The Notes From New York team continue to prosper and have now graduated to a short West End season. In truth The Last Five Years is not a great show. It's entertaing but slight and suffers because the parallel stories concept prevents any chemistry between the two characters apart from once when the stories intersect. However it does offer NFNY's two associate artists, Paul Spicer and Julie Atherton, the opportunity to prove again that there are no finer interpreters of American writing on the London stage. Hopefully their success will continue and they will be able to repeat this project because this was an extremely pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon....
