Disney's High School Musical

Synopsis

A contemporary musical comedy about Troy, a popular high school basketball star, and Gabriella, a shy, academically gifted newcomer, who discover they share a secret passion for singing. When they sign up to audition together for the lead roles in the school musical it threatens East High's rigid social order and sends their peers into uproar. In an attempt to maintain the status quo, the ‘jocks’ and ‘brainiacs’, and even the drama club regulars, are soon hatching convoluted plans to separate the pair and keep them offstage. Defying expectations and taking a chance on their dreams, and each other, the couple inspires the other students to go public with some surprising hidden talents of their own.

There’s still hope for disappointed 11 and 14-year-old school children who were recently given the bad news that they will receive their ‘Sats’ results late this year because of chaos in the admin system. To get top marks and shine in every department, they should whizz over to the Hammersmith Apollo to register for the wholesome student world of High School Musical where the only sign of any classroom disorder is mounting peer pressure tension over who will eventually get to play the lovers in East High’s winter musical, a feminist version of Romeo and Juliet.

The millions of tweenagers who have already bought into the undeniable charms of the original Disney made-for-TV movie which kick-started the High School Musical global phenomenon (HSM3 is on its way) will of course already know who’s gonna bop to the top of this class.

Everything works out fine and dandy when brainy but shy new girl Gabriella Montez and East...

I want to say this right out, i am an avid theatre goer and i LOVE the films....which meant that i was sure to love the musical but i didnt. It was mostly well acted but you couldnt hear a thing the sound mix was awful. They have re arranged the songs and put them in a slightly different order so the kids couldnt sing a long which is what most of them wanted to do. They manipulated the story...which again is different from the film. The extra songs are lovely and you can see exactly where they fit in and they work. The set was stunning and the dances were good. For me it had changed too much from the film and not in a good way. The films were such a huge phenomenon....and i understand that you wouldnt want it to be a carbon copy but personally i feel it has gone to far in the opposite direction....
