Synopsis

Set in late 18th Century Sweden - a story of intrigue and spectacle. The subject of Verdi's A Masked Ball which dealt with adultery in high places and a political assassination within living memory, was sufficiently shocking to fall foul of Italian censors. Verdi acceded to a change of location on condition that the drama was not placed in the too distant past.
