The RSC and Cardboard citizens have got together to produce Pericles, one of Shakespeares later plays. Set withing a warehouse just off of old kent road(which we had a bit of trouble finding), this production was brave, interesting and different! As soon as you arrive at this production, you get the feeling that this is not going to be quite what you expected. We entered slighly apprehensive and nervous. The show starts as soon as you arrive, when you become part of the play. Ingenious use of set, and a deep understanding of modern day problems and issues make this production so relevant. The story is intertwined between Pericles, and the harrowing story of an asylum seekers struggles. Again i have to mention the set - which was great. The warehouse is huge allowing you to walk through each room given you a feeling being transported into a whole new area or different land, as in the play. There is some dodgy acting though, and although they are not all trained actors, every person puts 100% into this production. I would like to mention that both Pericles older and younger played by Kevork Malikyan and Christopher Simpson, are extremely watchable. The younger Pericles portrayal is very good, and he is quite cute too ! I really enjoyed the majority of this production, there were moments of confusion but once the play started you quickly found what was going on, theres a very sexy dance sequence, and a bit of a naff ending. Those of you that know Pericles - the statue of Diana is a statue of Princess Diana !? What i would say those is go see this production. Its heartfelt, brave and different. Be open to what you see ! It's well worth it and you will get a lot more from it ! Oh and 1 last thing, dont have the misfortunes of sitting near the American Tourist who also went on the same night as me, who did not stop whispering about it not being shakespeare ! ...
