Synopsis
How did Uganda's Idi Amin Dada evolve from engaging charmer, feted and encouraged by Western leaders, to crazed dictator responsible for the misery of millions and the murder of 350,000 of his people? Using a labyrinth of African theatrical forms, Big Dada charts Amin's descent into psychotic paranoia and his country's breakdown into chaos, amid the tribalism, poverty, religious factionalism and Superpower machinations which seethe across the post-colonial landscape of Africa. With an all male cast, the production layers speech, dance, singing, African ritual and symbols with caricature and contemporary theatre techniques to move from the comic to the horrific. Big Dada melds different and opposing styles of storytelling into a rich and irreverent experience that explores the links between charisma and corruption, creating a growing sense of the macabre as the true nature of the Amin regime unfolds.
