Synopsis

East London, 1942. Germany continues to bomb a scorched and devastated city. High upon a factory rooftop, two women keep watch over their little corner of London together. They are Firewatchers. Wealthy Catharine and munitions worker Jean are the most unlikely pairing, but over the course of one dramatic evening, their hopes, fears and differences play out amid the tension of an air raid. The Firewatchers tells the story of two very different - but equally lonely - women struggling to matter and keep their morale in a time when many thought Britain wouldn't make it, but few dared say it.

My husband and I felt truly lucky to stumble upon this play during our vacations to London 10 days ago. We were searching for some Shakespeare and saw that the Old Red Lion was showing a compilations of Shakespeare's plays jumbled together in a comic review. We found the theater (barely) and bought tickets not realizing that that show finished showing 2 weeks prior. My husband and I didn't realize that this was not a Shakespearian remake until about 15 minutes in. I just thought that maybe I really didn't know my Shakespeare and heck they all have British accents. Well it was wonderful surprise. "The Firewatchers" was a splendid play. The two female actresses were perfect for the parts and put in such beautiful layers into both characters. Not to mention after the play we had the privilege to talk to both the director and writer about how America's view on WWII differs from England's. It was quite a memorable evening!...
