Synopsis

On his travels through England, Nicholas encounters a gallery of weird and wonderful characters - from the monstrous Wackford Squeers, to the eccentric Crummles and his travelling players. Scenes of comedy and burlesque alternate with scenes of high drama.

I was privileged to see the original RSC production some 21 years ago and part of me thought it might be a risk to see this one. It must be very daunting to revive something so significant in the recent history of theatre, but Chichester FT has risen to the challenge. Both the production and the ensemble are the equal of that first incarnation and it’s thrilling to see a 2008 West End audience rising to its feet in appreciation. I am so delighted the other part of me persuaded me to go!...
