Synopsis

A fairy-tale treat for families, Hans Christian Andersen's classic children's tale of adventure, friendship and bravery. Once, a wicked goblin made an evil mirror. When you looked into it, everything good and beautiful appeared worthless and bad. Then, the mirror was broken into a million pieces. Some got into people's eyes and, for them, the world became an ugly place. Even worse, some got into people's hearts and turned them into lumps of ice. That's what happens to Kai. Now he isn't happy with his home, his grandmother or his best friend, Gerda. He flies away to live with the Snow Queen in her icy palace far away in Lapland. Heartbroken, Gerda sets off alone across the wide world to find him, helped by the little robber girl, the crow and the reindeer.

Overall, a fun evening for children, teens, and adults. I agree that the sound system was too loud and made the words hard to follow, and that the panto lost momentum near the end of the first half. However, our party of 10 enjoyed the show, and there was no sign whatever of under rehearsal. The music was outstandng and the set and props superb ( bear in mind that this is not a subsidised big budget show). We ranged from adults, through teenagers, to 7 year olds. Younger children behind us were clearly enthralled and joined in wholeheartedly, especially to prevent Gerda from drinking the poisoned drinks and food. The performances mentioned were excellent ( Robber Princess, Ice Queen, Lapland Tourst Guide, and Dame ), but other solid performances included Gerda, Little Hans ( watch his facial expressions!), and the evil witch. Kai actually handled his part well, combining good and evil very successfully, in a way that cut it with our mixed-race London teens. His rapping was perfect and the words very good indeed. There was lots of interest and variety in the plot ( though the Troll parts did not work too well as they were meant to be evil and not to befriend the audience). I would like to see this show tweaked around a bit and then revived!...
