Synopsis

The story of frustrated young (illegally young in modern terms) love and death and the vendetta between two families in a tight-knit Italian community. One of Shakespeare's most popular and enduring dramas it has also been re-done as film, ballet, musical (most notably "West Side Story") and ice spectacular!

I've seen a few productions of this play over the years and have never been quite convinced until now. There is much to admire in this production, full of youthful passion. At the heart, tghe star crossed lovers deliver strong performances. Mariah Gale's Juliet really comes into her own in the tragic scences while Sam Troughton invests Romeo with real passion, full of lfe and totally entranced by Juliet. Its clear that Troughton is going to be a fine Shakespearean actor (his Brutus is also excellent). There are also some fine supporting performances, notably a fiesty, pipe smoking nurse played with gusto by Norma Dumezweni and a superbly comic and camp Mercutio played by Jonjo O'Neill.
