GAMEPLAN is the first of a trilogy of entirely separate plays linked by the same set and using the same cast. Ayckbourn has assembled an incredibly strong ensemble for the summer comprising Robert Austin, Saskia Butler, Bill Champion, Tim Faraday, Jacqueline King, Alison Pargeter and Beth Tuckey and fully demonstrates his assured direction in-the-round. As is often the case with Ayckbourn a comic surface to the play often conceals a rank and festering underside and GAMEPLAN is no exception. I felt distinctly uncomfortable at the antics of two 16 year girls trying to seduce an elderly punter - yet the audience were howling with laughter at both the lines and the terrific performances. I also feel that the PVC clad dominatrix character has been done too often by the author (Small Family Business, Comic Potential, Communicating Doors etc.). Great naturalistic set by Roger Glossop. Perhaps not Ayckbourns best play but certainly well worth seeing...
