Synopsis
One of theatre’s most entertaining explorations of sexual politics and class restrictions The Chichester Festival’s 2010 revival of Pygamlion, starring Alistair McGowant as Professor Henry Higgins, transfers to the Garrick Theatre for a limited season, where Eliza Doolittle is played by Strictly Come Dancing winner and former EastEnders star Kara Tointon.
One of the George Bernard Shaw’s most popular plays and famously the basis for Lerner and Loewe’s 1956 Broadway musical My Fair Lady, Pygmalion is the story of egocentric Professor of Phonetics, Henry Higgins who makes a bet with his friend, Colonel Pickering, that he can transform the manners and speech of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and pass her off as a society lady.
Alistair McGowan was previously seen in the West End in Art, Cabaret and Little Shop of Horrors (for which he received an Olivier Award nomination). On television he is best know for his work on The Big Impression. He has also appeared in Preston Front, Bleak House and the title role in Mayo.
Diana Rigg, who played Eliza in 1972 at the Albery Theatre, returns to the West End as Mrs Higgins and Michael Feast plays Eliza's father, Alfred Doolittle.

Michael Coveney - 26 May 2011
Last year’s Chichester Festival Theatre production of Shaw’s Pygmalion has been cunningly re-scaled to fit snugly into the Garrick, though we miss that great moment when Higgins’s study rose majestically on a lift into the cavernous arena.
Otherwise, Philip Prowse’s staging and design are as striking as ever, and Rupert Everett reprises a Higgins of dark and sinister intent, both Mummy’s boy and phonetician-as-Frankenstein, and probably not a man of honour “where women are concerned.”
There’s a lot to be said for the idea that television soap stars and successful X Factor contestants are the Eliza Doolittles of our day. But Kara Tointon, who won Strictly Come Dancing and fell in love with her Russian dance coach and partner, transcends her own stereotype.
She’s remarkably assured on the stage, blessed with malleable good looks and tremendous lung power, and she mak...

I thought Kara Tointon was very good as the cockney Eliza but she showed signs that she was not the best actress in the 2nd half and her performance was lacklustre - she did not have chemistry at all with Alastair McGovern and he too, lapsed in the 2nd half. The supporting cast was brilliant and the best thing about it. Poor sets - very mediocre and let the performance down. I think Tointon was not trained enough as an actress to carry a West End production of that calibre - slightly amateurish....
