Synopsis

The award-winning new musical, Million Dollar Quartet, tells the electrifying story of the night in 1956 when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis came together to make music and ended up making history.

It is inspired by the actual event that took place on 4 December 1956 at Sun Records in Memphis and features over 20 of the greatest rock ’n’ roll, gospel, R&B and country hits ever written including: Blue Suede Shoes, I Walk The Line, Fever, Great Balls of Fire, Hound Dog, Folsom Prison Blues and Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On. The legendary meeting was masterminded by Sun Records’ founder Sam Phillips, who discovered all four of the musicians, and brought Elvis Presley (and his then girlfriend) back to the recording studio that launched him to stardom.

Together with Sun Records' fast-rising new superstar Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, who was still chasing his next big hit after writing and recording Blue Suede Shoes, the fourth member of this impromptu "quartet" was Phillips' latest signing, Jerry Lee Lewis.

Million Dollar Quartet is a story of fame, friendship, discovery, divided loyalties, professional jealousy and incredible music as four of the music industry’s most extraordinary talents, all in their creative prime, made music together for the first and only time in their careers.

Michael Coveney - 1 March 2011

Million Dollar Quartet is a jukebox musical of rock and roll hits pegged to the jam session that really happened at the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee, one December afternoon in 1956.

The first thing to say is that, after Mamma Mia! and Jersey Boys, jukebox shows that were thoroughly embedded in a theatrical structure with a well-worked narrative, this sort of thing really won’t do. On the other hand, the second thing is: if you’d seen Eric Schaeffer’s production in an Essex pub as a rock and roll tribute night, you’d have had a pretty good time.

So if Cameron Mackintosh wants to turn the Noël Coward into Thursday night in the Pig and Whistle, Benfleet, that’s entirely his business, and good luck to the audiences who help him do that. Even as a lookalike talent competition, though, this is pretty dire.

The quartet are Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley – feebly impersonated, respe...

A very good production. If you love rock and roll, definitely something for you. OK, the storyplot is nothing special [if you want a drama climax, go for drama] but this cast are amazing. Real great singers and musicians. I wish I could play piano like the guy on stage. Not to forget the perfect drummer !! Catchy songs, perfect performing, dancing audience in the end. Really a good relaxing evening, full of fun and great songs, all very well performed. 4 syllables : PHE NO ME NAL, worth to see...
