Synopsis

Maggie Brown dreams of fame as she cares for wounded soldiers in an East End hospital. With her best friend George, a Jewish songwriter fleeing the Nazis, she auditions at cabaret bars, but nobody wants their act. Then the couple meet the charismatic and wealthy Frank Conner... This musical by Matthew Bugg brings the scandals of the 1940s thrillingly to life.

After a previous unsatisfactory outing with a burlesque show in 2012, I approached Matthew Bugg’s Miss Nightingale: A Burlesque Musical with a certain amount of trepidation. This is an art form that doesn’t particularly appeal and a musical based around it couldn’t really work, could it?

The answer is: yes. Bugg, who wrote both book and score, has created some beautifully crafted songs for his star, Amber Topaz, who bumps and grinds every speck of raunchiness out of her character, Maggie Brown, the eponymous Miss Nightingale.

The piece is not without its flaws. Miss Nightingale would desperately like to be a Gypsy or a Cabaret, but doesn’t quite cut it, although it comes very close.
