Synopsis Paris is being terrorized by the evil Cardinal and a monstrous creature who suffers from serious mood-swings! The young sword-fighter d’Artagnan finds himself on an epic quest to save the city and a pregnant Princess, but he needs the help of the Three Musketeers. Rumour has it they’ve gone to seed, gone past their sell-by date and gone into hiding. So first of all he has to find them... Based on the classic characters created by Alexandre Dumas, this hilarious, anarchic and utterly thrilling new production promises an unforgettable journey into enchanted forests, over lost streams and around REALLY horrible baddies, as we cheer our hero D'Artagnan and heroine Constance to a victorious end. Featuring a dash of live music and a hefty dose of fun, The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain is a play about friendship, love and identity. Oh... and baby-eating monsters! If you’re looking for a family trip out now that the weather is starting to turn, then the Belgrade Theatre’s latest offering of The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain could be just the tonic. With swashbuckling sword fights (choreographed by Renny Krupinski and excellently executed by an energetic cast), fast-paced action, romance and comedy, there’s enough to keep any family member enthralled from start to finish.
If you’re hoping to see the traditional story, then you may be a little disappointed (only for a moment though) as this tale takes inspiration from the original book by Alexandre Dumas and creates a whole new adventure set in a dark, dismal yet magical Paris. We follow brave D’Artagnan (a Peter Pan-esqe Oliver Gomm) and his best friend Constance (a very gutsy Cynthia Erivo) as they embark on a quest to save Paris and the Spanish princess (Beatriz Romilly) from the clutches of the evil Cardinal (Clive Mendus) and a sinister and mysterious creature who likes to eat babies for supper!
The story by Chris Hannan is incredibly feelgood with colourful characters and some great messages. The cast look like they’re having such a great time that you can’t help but get swept up by their energy - but make sure you listen in as things happen so quickly, you’ll need your wits to keep up with them!
A special mention has to go to the excellent puppet design from Colin Richmond and Rachael Canning. Their use, combined with an inventive sound design from Nikola Kodjabashia brought that extra magical quality to the production.
The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain is good riotous fun for all the family. All for one and one for all!
