Synopsis

With a new government imminent and a world divided about healing the planet, Far Away tells the story of a love affair played out against the odds. A young girl is far from home. It's late and she can't sleep. She opens her bedroom window and, in the darkness, discovers a secret which will change her life forever. So begins a journey into the heart of our collective hopes, hidden fears and most urgent questions.

Far Away only has three scenes, three characters and is 50 minutes long, and although it might not leave you yearning for more angst, it does, purposefully, leave you with a few missing links. Written by Caryl Churchill and first performed ten years ago, it's a disturbing story of a deeply divided violent world. Shocking, ambiguous and provoking, it certainly is; pleasing entertainment - maybe not.

The play starts relatively serenely as an innocent child, Joan, tells her aunt, Harper, that she cannot sleep. She has heard a person scream, but Harper tries to reassure her that there is nothing to be scared of, making up potentially more acceptable reasons for both the noise and the other distressing events Joan has seen outside. Joan is not convinced, however, and her continued examination brings out the horrific truth.
