Synopsis
Bronte explores the real and imagined worlds of the three Bronte sisters, living in isolation on the Yorkshire moors. In 1845 their brother Branwell returned home in disgrace, plagued by alcohol and drug addiction, having been dismissed after an affair with the mistress of the house. As Branwell descended into alcoholism and insanity, bringing chaos to the household, his sisters wrote some of the most powerful and passionate fiction of all time.

Shared Experience’s Bronte dives in and out of the sisters’ collective imagination like the chimerical lapwing, poetically entwining 'fact' and fiction until the one is almost unidentifiable from the other.
From its snappy beginning to the closing light, Kristin Atherton, Elizabeth Crarer and Flora Nicholson shift the play along at quite a pace. Never physically leaving the confines of the Bronte parsonage, the audience is nevertheless carried from childhood games to inevitable endings via misty moorland, manor houses and sea fronts.
And yet, as the audience is following from extract to extract, it staggers in the scene changes. Most feel unnecessary or clunky, and if the company could steal seconds from the semi-darkness chair shifting and add them in silence to the bleak moments of the siblings' lives, then it would be almost pitch-perfect. As it is, the pain the Brontes feel with their lot isn’t allowed to gently simme...
