Synopsis
Colonial Trinidad 1941. Three sisters live a privileged life in Port of Spain occupying themselves with empty marriages and indiscreet liaisons. Their dream is to return home to their adopted country, England, where they spent their cosmopolitan youth. But their ambitions of emigrating to Britain crumble as the second World War escalates and the Trinidadian army is called upon to serve King, Country and Empire. Chekhov s Three Sisters has been adapted by one of the most prolific and lyrical African-Caribbean playwrights of our time. Mustapha Matura has won numerous awards for his plays that include Playboy of the West Indies and As Time Goes By.
Our Review:

Michael Coveney - 14 September 2012
Life in the future for Chekhov's Baron Tusenbach means full employment and quantum teleportation; there is no such thing as happiness, that's just a marketing ploy. And the "local" girl Natasha who barges into the three sisters' household and snares their blubbery brother is an Australian with tattooed legs.
By relocating Chekhov in the modern world, director Benedict Andrews, in one of the most thrilling and refreshing productions of a Chekhov play I have ever seen, adds an ironic poignancy to the familiar sense of anomie and frustration. We are retreating from an "improved" world, not going towards it.
In this shaken up society, Irina's birthday gift is an antique samovar, tied in ribbons. The set is a huge rectangular platform comprising countless grey square tables, all of which are rhythmically removed during the aftermath...

This was one of the most beautiful productions of chekhov I have ever seen. Usual outings to see this play are typically boring and tiresome, this was quite the opposite. The performances were solid throughout. Emily barclay is superb as Natasha and Danny Kirrane as her put upon husband both hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure. Vanessa kirby, Mariah Gale and Gala Gordon were spot on as the sisters. Get a ticket before this sells out, I'm going again next week. :)...
