Synopsis

A musical fable of Broadway. Based on story and characters by Damon Runyon. Book written in 1950. A Salvation Army officer, Sister Sarah, attempts to save the souls of the New York gamblers. "Luck be a Lady", "I've Never Been in Love Before", "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat"

Don Johnson is best known for his TV role as Detective James ‘Sonny’ Crockett in the 1980s American cop show Miami Vice. Some 20 years later, the gamekeeper has turned poacher to make his West End debut playing gambler and genuine sinner Nathan Detroit in of Broadway classic Guys and Dolls. Unfortunately, the transition isn’t a very successful one.

Though now packing more girth than guns, Johnson still looks in good nick – as some appreciative whistles from the audience at first sight of him demonstrates – but age, or boredom, seems to have caught up with him nonetheless. He moves with glacial speed on stage as if trying to conserve his energy, limply delivering his lines (with only the barest hint of a New York accent) and missing nearly every comic cue. His Nathan is slow, slow, slow.

Saw the show on Sat 10th March and left feeling nothing much at all. We generally see a show once or twice a year and look forward to leaving the theatre having had an emotional journey, but Guys and Dolls just left us feeling much the same as when we went in. Don’t get me wrong it’s not a bad show, the music is good Don Johnson was OK, the support were good and Claire Sweeney was good / impressive in parts but the story line was just a bit flat. We’re glad we saw it but unlike other shows, we wouldn’t go back for seconds. ...
