Synopsis
Mrs Alving is ecstatic when her son returns home after years abroad. But within days she's forced to unearth the past and the ghosts who refuse to be silenced.

When I read that this new version of Ibsen’s Ghosts by Rebecca Lenkiewicz intended to “give Ibsen’s language a modern twist”, I was worried that I'd have to endure another pointless updating. However my fears were unfounded, and what I experienced was a powerful, fresh, lucid and very moving production which reinforces the play's classic status.
This is a production worthy of the National Theatre, and in fact director Bijan Sheibani has been invited to direct a show there later this year. He has drawn excellent performances from the cast and manages to achieve a tantalising balance between the profound tragedy of the piece and the ironic humour inherent in each of the character’s delusions, yearnings, deceptions and hypocrisies.
Ghosts is a biting exposé of the sexual hypocrisy of Victorian society and when it was first staged in 1882 provoked one critic to describe it as “a dirty deed done in public”. Its sordid themes of adultery, incest and venere...
