Synopsis

London’s longest running revival, Chicago the Musical opened in London in November 1997 and played at the Adelphi Theatre for 9 years until transferring to the Cambridge Theatre in April 2006. Bob Fosse choreographed the original production and his style is strongly identified with the show. The 1996 Chicago Broadway revival also holds the record for the longest-running musical revival.

Chicago the Musical is the kiss-and-tell story of ambitious chorus girl Roxie Hart who is in prison for murdering her lover and trying to pin it on her hapless husband Amos. Here she meets Velma Kelly, the glamorous double-murderer. Desperate for fame, fortune and freedom, the women enlist the help of slick and manipulative lawyer Billy Flynn. Both women will be hanged for their crimes if they lose their cases and are prepared to go to any lengths to escape execution.

Chicago the MusicalVery topical in our celebrity-seeking times, Chicago in London also provides some of the most sensational roles in all musical theatre with songs including All That Jazz, Razzle Dazzle, Class and All I Care About.

Like Chicago Broadway, Chicago London has included many international celebrities and actors in the starring roles including [Tina Arena, John Barrowman, Jennifer Ellison, Maria Friedman, Tony Hadley, Jill Halfpenny, David Hasselhoff, Ruthie Henshall , Bonnie Langford, Ute Lemper, Marti Pellow, Brooke Shields, Ashlee Simpson, Jerry Springer, Claire Sweeney, Denise Van Outen, Sally Ann Triplett, Michelle Williams and Jonathan Wilkes.

The move from the Adelphi to the much smaller Cambridge theatre has not caused Chicago to lose any of its Razzle Dazzle. The musical, which is now in it’s ninth year in the West End, doesn’t seem to have changed at all since I first saw it about three years ago. Which is probably a good thing, showing a consistent level of professionalism (despite the occasional bizarre “celeb” casting choices over the years.)

The current cast, headlined by Bonnie Langford as Roxie, who recently upped her profile by coming third in ITV celebrity staking show Dancing on Ice, had a few weeks to get used to their roles before the move, which has given the show about jazz murderesses a more intimate feel – a plus because the often under-stated direction meant some details were lost by row M in the cavernous Adelphi - and the talented and enthusiastic band certainly sounds louder in the smaller space.

Langford is endearing as Roxie, playing the role with an innoce...

I've seen this show countless times and as there hasn't been a review recently, I thought I'd just add my thoughts. The current cast has got to be the best I've ever seen (bar Ruthie Henshall, but we all know that amaing woman can do no wrong!) Emma Barton is fantastic as Roxie and is even better than she was on tour and I thought she was fabulous then. Terrence Maynard is the best Billy Flynn I've ever seen, and Jasna Ivir is easily the best Mamma - she cries during the Hunyak's scene and I've never seen another Mamma do that. And her voice is amazing. Rachel Muldoon is also the best Hunyak I've seen - the way she acts during her monologue in 'Cell Block Tango' is so powerful, and Lisa Norman is just the absolute stand out of all the ensemble (not just because of her height!) She just has the energy and the flawless performance skills and the enthusiasm. Finally, I have to say how incredible I think the current 'unknown' Velma is, played by Vivien Carter. She was previously in the ensemble understudying but has deservedly been given the role and extended twice. She's even better than Ruthie as Velma, and I never thought I'd say that! There is such power to her voice, particularly in 'All That Jazz' and 'My Own Best Friend' and she brings an emotion to Velma I've not seen before. I'll be seeing her for the forth time in August and can't wait. I highly recommend this show, particularly for it's current cast! ...
