Synopsis Based on Billy Wilder's 1950 Oscar-winning film of the same name, Sunset Boulevard depicts the faded glamour of former Hollywood actress Norma Desmond. The ex-silent movie star is portrayed living in isolation, with only memories for company. However, when struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis appears at her house, she demands a second chance in the limelight.
This is a magnificent production which sits comfortably in the intimate space of the Watermill. It would be criminal if it didn't get a West End transfer! Kathryn Evans, triumphant as Norma Desmond, not only carries the singing and acting off to perfection, but also looks a dead ringer for Gloria Swanson who created the original role in Billy Wilder's iconic film. In this production Ms Evan's is helped by the superb make-up, wigs and costumes of the Watermill production team. Ben Goddard is a credible, touching Joe who matches Kathryn Evans in both the acting and singing stakes. The rest of the equally talented cast play all the instruments and do not dissappoint us with Mr Lloyd-Webber's sumptuous score. A triump and revelation with the Watermill proving yet again that big is not always best - despite Norma's memorable line: "I am big, it's the pictures that got small!" - rds

A stunning production. This show has been crying out for a small-scale treatment - many of the scenes involve just two or three principal actors and the piece always seemed lost on a larger stage. Kathryn Evans and Ben Goddard make a very believable Norma & Joe. - John
