    | Curious; definitely not a play and not really a one-man "show", Sweet William most resembles a cosy lecture to a dramatic society. Actor and self-proclaimed expert Michael Pennington follows the chronology of Shakespeare's life illustrating it with vivid interpretations from many of the plays and sonnets. However the chosen text does not always follow the same chronology, particularly a snippet from Henry IV intended as a form of eulogy on the eve of Shakespeare's death even though the play is attributed to the middle period. There is aso almost no mention of the death of his son Hamnet. Despite those quibbles, Pennington always holds the attention and is a superb interpreter of Shakespeare, shining a clear light on the text. - David Baxter | 08 Feb 08 |
