Synopsis The story of frustrated young (illegally young in modern terms) love and death and the vendetta between two families in a tight-knit Italian community. One of Shakespeare's most popular and enduring dramas it has also been re-done as film, ballet, musical (most notably "West Side Story") and ice spectacular! This year the Middle Temple and the Inner Temple are united in celebrating a unique and historic occasion - the 400th anniversary of the granting of their land by King James 1st in 1608. As part of this celebration Romeo & Juliet will play in the Middle Temple Hall, which famously in 1602 hosted Shakespeare's company in the first recorded performance of Twelfth Night. For 30 performances only, this exquisite venue will house all the breathless excitement and heart-wrenching tragedy of this extraordinary play and its star-crossed lovers. Founded in 2006, Theatre of Memory received critical acclaim for its inaugural West End production of Neil Labute's Bash, including Time Out 'Critics' Choice' 5 STARS and 'Show of the Week'. Middle Temple Hall, Middle Temple Lane, London, EC4Y 9AT. Tickets on sale from Barbican Box Office: 0845 120 7543
Can't add much more to David's remarks below. Some good performances but direction a bit flat and the all-white costumes very homogenising. I can kind of see the point of them, but it didn't work for me. I was thinking that the lack of set and the harsh white lighting leached any atmosphere from the production, but then I saw the Globe's Richard II here in 2003 - same lighting, same minimal set - and was stunned by it. I also agree that the vast empty spaces in the audience didn't help. I will admit, though, that it always had a tough job on its hands with me as I don't much like the play and need to won over, but iit was never going to happen with this production. - Belasarius Mock

Postscript to below: A lack of publicity and excessive ticket prices (£45) may have contribute dto the hall being less than half-full which, in natural daylight, did not help. - David Baxter

The main attraction of this production is the setting in London's ancient Middle Temple Hall but its' success is compromised by the decision to use hideous, almost all white, modern dress. There is also virtually no design which makes it very difficult to visualise the scenes, especially the tragic climax in the Capulet's tomb. Santiago Cabrera as Romeo is as wooden as the panelling surrounding the hall: he's learned the words but has none of the necessary passion. Juliet Rylance is much better in her namesake role, as you would expect given her pedigree. Martin Turner and Nicolas Tennant cope best with the tricky acoustics and Ann Mitchell is excellent as the Nurse, but only when she is facing the right side of the room. An interesting experience but Tamara Harvey's direction needed more imagination. - David
